BlephEx® for Healthier, More Comfortable Eyes

Gently Clean Your Eyelids at the Source of the Problem

If your eyes constantly feel irritated, crusty, or itchy—especially around the lashes—you might be dealing with a common condition called blepharitis. This chronic inflammation of the eyelids often stems from the buildup of bacteria, debris, and oils along the lash line.

BlephEx® is a simple, in-office procedure that targets this problem directly. By cleaning and exfoliating the base of the eyelashes, BlephEx® helps restore eyelid health, reduce inflammation, and relieve the symptoms of dry eye. It’s like a professional deep clean for your eyelids—and it only takes a few minutes.

What Is BlephEx®?

BlephEx® is a handheld medical device designed to remove years of accumulated biofilm and debris from the eyelid margins. It uses a soft, rotating micro-sponge to gently exfoliate the base of the eyelashes and clean the oil glands that line your lids.
Think of BlephEx® like a dental cleaning—but for your eyes. Just like brushing at home is helpful but doesn’t replace a professional cleaning, daily eyelid hygiene can be improved dramatically with periodic in-office BlephEx® treatments.

Why Treat Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is one of the most common—but often overlooked—causes of chronic eye discomfort. It occurs when the oil glands at the edge of the eyelid become clogged or inflamed due to bacteria, flakes, or hardened oil buildup. This condition can trigger redness, stinging, crusting, eyelid swelling, and even contribute to the development of styes or worsening dry eye disease.

Left untreated, blepharitis tends to become chronic and can lead to more severe complications. By treating the problem at its source—right at the lash line—BlephEx® helps manage symptoms, protect the surface of the eye, and prevent flare-ups.

Who Is a Candidate for BlephEx®?

BlephEx® is ideal for individuals who suffer from chronic eye irritation, especially those diagnosed with blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). If you notice flaking or crusting along your eyelids, experience a burning or gritty sensation in your eyes, or regularly wear contact lenses or makeup, you could benefit from this treatment.

A dry eye evaluation can help us determine if BlephEx® is appropriate for you. We’ll take a close look at your eyelid health and tear film stability to recommend a personalized treatment plan.

BlephEx® vs. At-Home Lid Hygiene

At-home treatments like warm compresses and lid scrubs are a good start—but they often can’t remove the biofilm and hardened oils that build up over time. BlephEx® provides a deeper clean that’s only possible in a clinical setting, under direct supervision by your eye care provider.
After the procedure, we’ll usually recommend continuing with daily lid hygiene at home to maintain your results and extend the time between treatments.

What to Expect During the Procedure

BlephEx® is quick, comfortable, and doesn’t require any downtime. Before starting, we apply numbing drops to make sure you feel little to no discomfort during the cleaning process. You may feel a gentle brushing or tickling sensation as the sponge moves across your eyelid margins.

Most treatments take under 10 minutes total. Afterward, your eyes might feel slightly sensitive or red for a few hours, but you’ll be able to return to normal activities right away.
